Winter scalp woes got you sporting a beanie like we’re in the Ice Age? Our resident scalp superhero, Abigail, is here to save the day (and provide your hat a much-needed rest).
Tip 1: Massage conditioner or hair oil into your scalp BEFORE applying your shampoo.
Working a few pumps of conditioner or your favorite hair oil into your scalp before shampooing increases circulation while lifting away any dry flakes, and just kind of creates a foundation to give your hair a good wash afterward. It’s especially nice if your scalp tends to get itchy in the colder months. Washing twice (lather, rinse, repeat) ensures that dirt, debris, AND product are all removed during the first shampoo, leaving the scalp clean and ready to receive the hydrating benefit of the second shampoo. (If your ends are dry due to heat damage, but your scalp is pretty well balanced, skip this tip and focus on Tip 3!)
Tip 2: Brush your hair!
Detangle the ends, brush your scalp. It’s great for circulation, feels amazing, and also helps to move your natural oils down through the ends so you can get some hydration and shine through the winter months.
Tip 3: Use a leave-in conditioner.
When our scalp is dry, our ends get dry. Leave-in conditioner helps remedy this. A lot of people feel like if they’re using a deep conditioner, that’s good enough, but a deep conditioner is sort of like giving your hair a shot of water in the shower; a leave-in is like giving your hair a water bottle to drink out of all day long. It just gives your hair an extra bit of hydration.
It can also be used as a preventive if your scalp is pretty well balanced out but your hair is exposed to a lot of heat and/or your ends are dry from heat damage. Put it in your hair after the shower—a few pumps gently squeezed into the midlengths and ends—and then leave it in to dry.
Another tip for preventing unnecessary dryness: Be sure to only apply shampoo to your scalp. Avoid the ends!
Tip 4: Avoid blow-drying your hair.
At least once a week, give your hair and scalp a break and let it air-dry! With that leave-in conditioner in there, it is going to feel oh-so good. Maybe on a day when you’re just going to be around the house, give it a chance to rest from the heat and get some good hydration.
Tip 5: Use an at-home treatment like Ginger & Maude’s Fabulous.Hair.Shit Scalp Treatment.
This is a really awesome treatment to use in lieu of your shampoo and conditioner in between wash days to help balance out the natural oils and treat those dry ends. It’s also great as a weekly or as-needed at-home treatment any time your scalp is needing a little boost. Be sure to fully rinse it out!
