A few things we’re SUPES grateful for right now:
-Karina moved to Portland.
-Karina decided to pursue a career in hair.
-Karina walked her badass, witchy, taro-boba-drinking self into Ginger & Maude one day and thought, “Hell yeah. This is my place.”
We cannot get over how gotdamn stoked we are to have Karina as a New Talent on our team. Seriously. You need to be in her chair. SHE SPINS FUCKING FIRE, OKAY?! Also, offers excellent chats about animals, art, and horror movies at no extra charge. There you go.
Q: Tell us about yourself!
A: Hi! I'm Karina, and I am 30 years old. Born in Denver, Colorado, and growing up in San Diego, California, I moved to Portland in 2020 with my now fiancé and our bundle of animals—two large dogs, two ferrets, and a tortoise. I'm super passionate about animals, especially horses, as well as art and crafting. I love adventure and being outside, but I also love being lazy at home and watching horror movies. I was inspired to become a hairstylist because it is a creative career where you're working with your hands, and I love to learn about other people and hear their stories!
Q: What hair trends have you most excited right now?
A: I really enjoy shags, wolf cuts, and mullets. Plus, what artist doesn't love vivid hair color?!
Q: Let's talk about our tagline—'We don't just love hair, we love people.' How do you see Ginger & Maude being authentic to that and how do you bring it to life?
A: I see Ginger & Maude being authentic to this tagline by being inviting and welcoming to all guests. I overheard our founder, Deanna, saying she wants people to feel like they are hanging out at their grandma's house, and I felt like that really summed it up. Ginger & Maude wants you to feel at home and like you can be yourself.
I bring this tagline to life by being accommodating and always putting my clients’ needs first—really giving a listening ear and making them feel pampered and celebrated in my chair.
Q: What haircut or style do you think will be all the rage in 2023? How about farther into the future, like in the year 2062?
A: We are starting to see a lot of ’90s styles come back into play, so definitely the Rachel and the Leonardo for 2023. In 2062, everyone will have fashion-color beehive updos.
Q: Where are your favorite Portland hangouts?
A: For nightlife, I really enjoy The Coffin Club, Retro Game Bar, and The Lift Off Lounge. My favorite spot is Wyrd Leatherworks and Meadery. During the day I love hiking in Forest Park, and spinning fire at Cathedral Park from time to time.
I'm always looking for new places, though! Since I moved here during the pandemic, I'm slowly learning and discovering.
Q: If you could be any animal, which one would you be and why?
A: I think I would be an owl because you have not just flight but silent flight! Also, you're a bird of prey, so not much will mess with you. You’re just a beautiful, feathered raptor that can spin your head around like the little girl in The Exorcist.
Karina is available for haircut services in our Fremont and Slabtown locations right now, so what are you waiting for?! Check out her work on Instagram, and then go visit her—book online or by calling or texting the salon at 971.267.4080—and help her decide if she should get a horse (she should).
