A few quick FAQs for you:
Q: Do you cut curly hair?
A: Yes, we absolutely do!
Q: Why don’t you have ‘Curly Haircut’ listed on your service menu?
A: We LOVE a good curly hair service. Like, please bring your curls here. That being said, you will not find “Curly Haircut” as one of our service listings. Here’s why: In our experience, Curly Haircut services are typically offered at a much higher price point than Haircut services that don’t have a descriptor attached to the beginning of their name. We take issue with this because 1) it implies that straight hair is the norm, expectation, or most desirable (which is inaccurate), and 2) it forces folks with curly hair to pay more, even if their service doesn’t actually require anything more. This, we think, (much like charging different prices based on gender) is utter nonsense. At Ginger & Maude, haircut prices are based on the amount of time it takes to complete the service.
Q: So, how can I schedule a haircut for my curly hair?
A: Glad you asked! To answer, we’re having curly haircut extraordinaire, Zack, take over:
A curly haircut IS a Haircut, so to start, that's the service you'll book (you can also decide if you'd like to work with a Stylist or Lead Stylist). From there, you’ll have the option to select the add-ons that apply to you so we can tailor the service to fully meet your needs. A few key ones are:
-If you are a new client or even if you just haven’t been in to see us in a few years, be sure to mark the New Client add-on during booking—this will reserve a little extra time for us to chat about your hair and what you're looking for, as well as answer any questions you might have.
-If you have thick hair (you can wrap a hair elastic only once around your ponytail) or long hair (the length is below your chest), there are options to mark either or both, or if your hair just typically takes a little longer, you can select “Additional time needed,” to ensure enough time is reserved.
It’s important to know too that, if you mark one of these, but then don’t end up needing the extra time, we’ll just forgo it in the future. Easy peasy and efficient. Also, if you’re unsure of what you need or should schedule, call the salon! Our front desk team can help answer questions or get you set up with a consultation to speak with a stylist.
Q: What can I expect during my service?
A: I always recommend clients come in with hair that is clean (it does not have to be freshly washed, so don’t stress too hard) and dry. Aim to have it styled in the way you most typically wear your curls—think your ideal hair day.
I like to start a curly haircut on dry hair, pulling out each individual curl one by one and cutting and shaping like that so we’re not stretching the hair out and then just hoping for the best when it springs back up. Instead, we’re cutting it as it already sits on its own, allowing us to sculpt out the most gorgeous shape possible. If you do like to occasionally wear your hair straight, I’ll brush it out afterward to make sure everything will still feel even when you do.
Then, we’ll shampoo, we’ll condition, we’ll do a scalp massage if you’re into scalp massages, and we’ll cut a little more while your hair is wet if it’s needed. From there, we’ll scrunch, plop, finger-twirl, do a combination; flip your hair upside down, keep it upright; diffuse, go under the dryer, air-dry—really, whatever you like to do. If there is something you’re curious about or a look you’ve been itching to try, we can test it out. If you want a blowout, we can do that too.
If you have any questions about products or curly techniques you’ve seen on TikTok that you’re unsure about, we can talk about all of that, and at the end, you’ll leave looking even more stunning than when you came in (if that is even possible).
