A big, warm welcome to our newest Stylist, Jacob, who is coming to us with over a decade of experience and LOTS of curly hair knowledge (we love).
As an added bonus, he's also showing up with stories about his two hairless cats and (if we're lucky) cozy-night board game and movie recs. 🤞
Let's learn more!
Q: Tell us about yourself!
A: Hi, I’m Jacob (he/him) and I’m a big hair nerd! I love cooking, my hairless cats, and any and all board/card games. I’m a Capricorn and tend to be more introverted at home and more extroverted at work. I’ve been in the hair industry since 2011. I’m from South Florida originally and moved to Portland in 2021. I love drag and queer nightlife!
Q: What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
A: As someone with curly hair, I was inspired to get into hair from a couple of questionable haircuts in my youth. After learning how to manage and style my hair, I never looked back. I am constantly inspired to stay in this industry through connection and education.
Q: Why did you choose Ginger & Maude as home?
A: Ginger & Maude aligns with my personal mission and ideals. The care and commitment that Ginger & Maude demonstrates for their employees and guests can be felt the second you walk into one of the salons.
Q: Tell us about a favorite feel-good moment you’ve had behind the chair.
A: I’ve been fortunate enough to help four generations of women at once in a previous salon—a great-grandmother, a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter. To share a bond with a family and their legacy is very beautiful and touching to me.
Q: Which styles and trends are giving you all the heart eyes right now?
A: I love that classic blowouts and soft blended haircuts are coming back into style right now. I also love that high-impact blondes and purposeful dimension in hair color are returning as well.
Q: When you aren’t in the salon, how are you most likely to be spending your time?
A: I’m finding that seasons really dictate my out-of-salon life. Spring and summer lead me into the great outdoors that the PNW has to offer. Fall and winter bring me back inside for quiet nights at home hosting dinner parties with board games and film and television.
Q: When it comes to at-home care for curly hair, what are the top tips you think folks should know?
A:
My five tips for curly hair:
1. The wetter the better!
When applying hair product to wet hair, remember the hair should be SOAKING wet. No towel-dry, no wringing out the excess water. I keep my favorite regime of curl products in the shower with me and apply it as I turn the water off!
2. Detangle, Clump, Coil!
With your hair soaking wet and a leave-in of your choice to help, detangle using a wet brush or wide-tooth comb. I use UN.TANGLED by KEVIN.MURPHY to help separate and define my curls while brushing my hair to help encourage healthy curl clumping. For those who have less defined curls, now would be a great time to finger coil to your desired curl structure.
3. L.O.C.K. the Curl in!
My last name is Povlock and there was a popular song back in my high school days by an artist named Huey called “Pop, Lock, and Drop It.” So to remember my last name and the next tip for curls, you are going to POV-LOCK and drop it. L.O.C.K. is an acronym for the order in which you'll want to apply your product: Leave-in, Oil, Cream, and Keep.
[ ] Leave-in - Detangle/heat protect
Consider Trying: UN.TANGLED, STAYING.ALIVE
[ ] Oil - Hydrate/moisturize
Consider Trying: YOUNG.AGAIN treatment oil
[ ] Cream - Define/enhance
Consider Trying: KILLER.TWIRLS, MOTION.LOTION
[ ] Keep - Hold/set
Consider Trying: BODY.BUILDER, KILLER.CURLS, SESSION.SPRAY FLEX
4. Utilize Gravity!
So, I put these products in my hair in the L.O.C.K. order and then, using a microfiber towel or old t-shirt, flip my head upside down and twist my hair up in a snug head wrap. I’ll dry slightly while I get dressed.
I use my bed to dry my hair with a space heater by Dyson. I bring the space heater up to the end of the bed, unwrap my head towel, and let my hair diffuse dry upside down for maximum volume. I spend 15 minutes doing my Wordle and Instagram posts.
5. No touchy!
Whether you are air-drying or diffusing your hair, the number one rule is DO NOT TOUCH! Your hair will develop a “cast” or stiff curl as it dries. This is normal. Your hair must be completely dry before finishing your style. Once it is, I love using YOUNG.AGAIN DRY CONDITIONER to scrunch away the crunch. Then I have fabulous curls all week long!
Keep up with Jacob on Instagram, and don’t wait to schedule your next service with him. He’s a dream and we’re so lucky he joined our team.❣️
