Do you like hiking? We know a stylist you might vibe with.
In fact, last week marked our beloved Summer’s return from a very long journey of thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, so it’s probably (definitely) time y’all met. Let’s learn more about her trip (and find out her #1 hairstyling recommendation for hiking!).
Q: You just got back from a very long and exciting adventure, can you tell us a little more about it?
A: Yes of course! I spent this summer hiking the 2650-mile-long Pacific Crest Trail, which travels from Mexico to Canada, going through California, Oregon, and Washington.
Q: What inspired you to walk the Pacific Crest Trail?
A: Moving to Oregon during the pandemic in 2020, I fell in love with the trails and freedom and adventure that came with being in the mountains. I also love to challenge myself so it seemed like the perfect fit.
Q: Tell us about your successes and challenges. What worked well and what didn’t quite go as planned?
A: I’d say all the gear research and really dialing everything in paid off in that I was able to get my pack weight down pretty low, which helped prevent any overuse injuries. On the other hand, there were some times with crazy weather where I wished I had some warmer, but heavier, clothes (such as when I got snowed/hailed on in shorts and a frog toggs® rain jacket with no gloves or hat).
Q: What was your favorite part of the journey?
A: Meeting all the awesome people out on the trail! It was super cool hiking with people from all over the world and from all walks of life.
Q: Any advice for others feeling drawn to make the same trek?
A: Know what your “why” is before you set out on the journey. When it gets tough, it’s important to remember why you’re out there!
Q: How did your skills and work as a hairstylist help you along the way?
A: I definitely earned my keep as the group hair-braider! But also, I think my ability to manage my time really helped me stay on top of it during big mileage days.
Q: Since this is a hair salon, we have to ask: What was your go-to style while on the trail?
A: Braids for days! I wanted to use the trail as a chance to grow my hair out but wanted to keep it healthy while doing so, and braids are perfect for that! Not only do they last super well for days at a time, but they also help disperse the tension, therefore preventing breakage, unlike you might get with a tight ponytail.
We’re so excited to have Summer back in the salon with us. (We’re also stoked we can now live vicariously through her commitment to making such a long-distance hike, because—phew!—that’s a LOT of walking.)
