Q: Tell us about yourself!
A: Hey, hi! My name is Dayla, I'm a 30-year-old Capricorn, and I grew up here in the Willamette Valley. I've had a lot of different jobs, but becoming a hairstylist is by far the coolest thing I've ever done. I'm gay and trans, and my hair has been a crucial part of my self-expression, so I love working with people to figure out what they want their hair to say.
When I'm not in the salon, I'm either hanging at home watching reality TV with my cat or biking around town, taking in the gorgeous neighborhoods and parks of Southeast Portland.

Q: What inspired you to become a hairstylist?
A: I started doing my own hair in middle school; it was hard to find a stylist in my small hometown who could give me the look I was after! I knew back then how significant my hair was to my self-expression, but I never gave it consideration as my possible career. For years, I was bouncing around different jobs and colleges trying to find my passion, and while working in food service, I got severely burned out. I kept getting ads for the Aveda Institute here in Portland, and it all suddenly kind of clicked for me that I can make my life how I want it to be. Hair is so deeply important to me and the best part of this job is making other people feel incredible about themselves. I love creating styles that make intuitive sense for my clients, like it's the hair they were always supposed to have. I pride myself on being able to do all kinds of hair, so bring me whatever you're working with!

Q: Why did you choose Ginger & Maude as home?
A: I put all my eggs in Ginger & Maude's basket when I was looking for salons. Their commitment to transparency, equity, and sustainability in their business practices gives me hope for what other businesses can also achieve. It feels amazing to work somewhere aligned with my personal values, and I get to share that energy with my clients.

Q: What is currently your fave KEVIN.MURPHY product and why do you love it?
A: My favorite KEVIN.MURPHY product has got to be BEDROOM.HAIR. It gives the hair a lived-in messiness that also looks so effortless and chic! Plus, it smells really good.

Q: Tell us about a favorite feel-good moment you’ve had behind the chair.
A: One of my favorite moments behind the chair was having a teenager come from way out of town to sit in my chair, chaperoned by their older sister. They brought a really fun inspiration pic and were kind of resigned to the fact that we wouldn't be able to make their hair look like the photo, but it all came together beautifully! They were basically speechless by the end, and I could tell what an impact it had on them to feel really heard and seen by a stylist. Teenagers have it hard, and it's my biggest joy to give them hair that reflects who they really are and who they want to be!

Q: What’s a monster movie you could watch again and again?
A: One of my favorite monster movies is Pacific Rim. I've watched it countless times already and will watch it plenty more times throughout my life! Don't talk to me about the sequel, though.
